Flexi Bond a farce

I recently purchased a new home and have my bond through FNB. I took the flexi bond option with them with the intention that I would place any extra money I had into this account in order to try and minimise the interest I would end up paying.

In order to test the flexi facility I put R1001 into the bond account. However, nothing shows up as available.

I queried this with premier banking and with home loans. They tell me that the reason my available balance shows up as zero is that an initiation fee has not been paid.

I find a number of issues with this. Firstly, it was the bank itself that offered me the option to add the initiation fee to my bond amount. They never told, nor is it documented anywhere, that this would influence my ability to use the flexi facility. Secondly, no where in the online facility does it tell you that you still owe an initiation fee. So the client is totally in the dark as to the reason for the amount not showing up.

At the end of the day, it's only the client that loses. I would have been able to save on interest by paying extra on my home loan months ago. But through an oversight on FNB's part. I ended up paying more interest.

Very disappointing
