Extremely poor customer service for non-resident client has me feeling like I am being discriminated against...

Earlier this year I switched from Standard Bank to FNB as I was told by many that FNB's customer service was superior. Now I am thinking I may have made the wrong choice.

I recently app**** for a credit card with FNB. When at the branch with the Advisor I was told that all I would need to give to them was payslips as they already had all of my information on file and because I work in SA for an SA company and earn my income in Rands. I sent it the payslips to the advisor as requested.

Shortly afterwards I received emails from FNB Credit Card asking for all of my documentation again, including a document called an 'Exchange Control'. I used the Secure Chat on the mobile app to ask what this document was but I was directed to the Non-Res department. They forwarded my query onto someone named Eric Jacobs and since then I have heard nothing for 8 days. Even their auto-reply says they will contact you within 3 business days, which are long gone. I have sent several emails to Eric, the Non-Res email address, as well as the two Advisors that assisted me in branch and no-one has yet to reply, even just to tell me what document I need.

This is terrible customer-service. I read on the FNB site that foreign nationals/temporary residents like myself should "be treated like residents for banking purposes", but I am starting to think this is not true. I am not even asking for a special account or card, just a regular credit card like any SA resident. I respect that the process may be different but I think I also deserve the same response time as any paying customer.

If this response time carries on as such, I will be switching banks for the second time this year. Let's hope they can prove me wrong!

On the day I posted this review I received 3 phone calls to say that my matter was being attended to, that a Manager was looking into it for me, and that I would have a response asap. Now it has been almost two days and I haven't heard anything since. Is something really being done about this issue or were the three phone calls just a way to appease me for the time being?

I was right. It was all just to appease me. It's been a week since I have heard from anyone regarding the status of my credit card application. This is as bad a it gets. You take an escalated complaint (not even through your regular channels) and call me three times in one day to say you are following up, and then nothing happens for a week. I am positive the manager, let alone anyone else, has even looked at my issue.....

Unless something happens very soon I think I will be coming in to close my accounts....and to think I was going to open up some investment accounts! If this is how poorly a simple credit card application is handled, I don't want to trust FNB with my hard earned money....

I am still not sure what happened in the background or how the issue was resolved but thank you for finally sorting it out and for granting me the credit card. Sorry it had to be done this way but hopefully we can move forward and maintain a successful relationship filled with great service. Thanks to those who actually assisted and to Johnson Mietha for getting everything sorted in a professional manner.
