Do I really need to go to a branch to cancel my credit card account?

I paid up my credit card more than a year ago and have been told that I need to go into a branch to cancel it. Surely, this can’t be right? Can’t I fill out a form and email it for cancellation? Why does canceling an account have to be so complicated and inconvenient?

I used to have such high regard of FNB in terms of being much more digital an convenient than other banks in my experience, but this is taking it back to the Stone Age honestly.
