DISAPPOINTMENT ON THE FNB HOME LOANS BEHAIVIOUR AND HOW THEY HAVE TREATED ME

I am not going to come here and claim to be a victim but I am crying foul. I believe I am being treated unfairly by FNB Home Loans. I have had my home loan for about 16 years and I cannot say it has been a good journey or experience. I went through financial problems and in 2016 I ended up in debt review. When I started paying under debt review I was paying more that what I was supposed to pay for the FNB home loan. I continued paying and at some point I wanted to understand if I get into a position that I can now pay my debt without being in debt review will it be possible for me to get out of debt review before finishing my debt. Unfortunately, the advise I got from the debt review consultant I spoke to was I am paying FNB home more that I am suppose to and I could use that extra money to pay quicker the other debts that are keeping me under debt review. I took the advise and reduced the payment to the amount I was advised I could pay. The debt review consultant I spoke to was not from my debt review counselling company. I then reduced the payment from =+/- R3200 to R2000 but on the months when I had extra money I would pay R2500 sometime R3000. This was a start of my problems but I was not aware of it as FNB did not say anything to me or my debt councillor. Towards the end of September I started getting SMSes from FNB saying my property will go on auction because I am in arrears. I then called the bank to ask how am I on arrears because I have been paying and I am under debt review. They then told me that my status has been revoked because I am on arrears on R53000. I asked how come and why wasn’t I told of this earlier. They told me that since I was in debt review they are not allowed to speak to me and they told my debt counsellor, I then checked with my debt counselling house and they told me that FNB has not communicated this to them. I went back to FNB and told them that my debt counselling house says that they have not received any communication from FNB and when I informed FNB of this they then sent me the communication which was a little too late and was due to the fact that I pointed out that what they said they did was not true. I feel I am being unfairly treated because if this was brought to my attention or my debt counsellor’s attention sooner the arrears would not have escalated this much. Now they are asking me to let them sell my property or stand a risk of it being auctioned if I do not pay all the arrears. I ask if they can restructure my home loan because I do not have the R53000 or the R10000 that they say I can pay over 10 months, they told me FNB does not restructure for people in arrears. This is not the first time I experienced such unfair treatment from FNB home loans. I have been paying for my property for more than 15 years for FNB to just come and auction it without even trying to assist me as their customer. They said I can apply for the home loans quick fix but it might not be approved and this tell me this is just a tick box to say that they tried to help me. I am still under debt review although I am left with less than a year to finish paying off the debt and had planned that as soon as I finish the paying off my debt I will be able to pay more towards my FNB home loan to try and finish the home loan before time. I think FNB will use the fact that I am still under debt review to decline the quick fix loan they are saying I must apply for. All I want is to protect my property and for myself and FNB to come to a middle ground where we can all win. I believe having been their customer for more than 15 years there is something that the bank can do rather than jump to the conclusion of foreclosure and let me loose my property.

Good Day

Thank you for your response and logging a formal complaint for me. I received an email from FNB saying they tried to reach me with no success. I might have missed their call but the number on which I got a missed call I tried calling it back and it was not going through. What’s surprising is that since they couldn’t get hold of me they decided to go ahead with legal action. I am not sure if there are any avenues to to take since I think this is unfair. I haven’t had an opportunity to talk to them but they have already decided that they will institute a legal action. Please advise on what I can do, I do not want to loose my property after paying for it for so many years. All I want is for FNB to work with me in finding a solution for this situation. Thank you
