Customer' rights to privacy not high on their agenda
Do we live in an authoritarian state where individuals have no right to privacy. Well that is what it feels like with FNB's new app feature which insists that users submit a selfie as a form of identification. There used to be a convenient one-time-pin that allowed one to identify oneself, but this has been sheved. First of all, the submission of any form of biometric should involve choice as it it potentially infringes on an persons right to privacy. Second of all, information of this form should only reside with the state, and not willy nilly with any private institution that feels it suits them. In addution to this, I am stunned at the unilateral way in which this feature was introduced to the app, with no forewarning to their customers. It almost feels as if fnb takes the personal 4oghts of individuals for granted by sneaking in such a feature without first informing anyone, and then, by removing the option to select any other kind of identification, such as the one-time-pin.
In a nutshell, it reeks.
