Cosed account (inactive) still adding monthly account fees.

I had platinum account with them, I went to Fordsburg branch to convert it to cheque account, consultant called their service department in my presence all was confirmed as successfully, but I realised later on that this was not the case. I went to Southgate branch to closed this account, I was told that they cannot close it as the a count was arrears. I tried EFT money into this account, it came back declined with message that said "Account Closed" which I don't have problem with because I haven't transact on this account for past 6 or 7 yrs. When I attempt closing this account it had arrears of around 1500. Fast forward to today 18/05/20 this account in arrears of -5620.30 DR, which include monthly account fee of 219.00 DR dated 18 April 2020. The account is closed I cannot deposit (transact) any money to it, adding of fees every month is not deactivated? why...... By the way this card have expired back in march 2020. Should I approach banking ombudsman, I cannot be paying exorbitant monthly fees for inactive account?

I received a call 2 days ago regarding this, The lady who called me said she will send email to escalate this matter, still awaiting feedback, she also told me that email was sent to consultant who assisted me at Fordsburg to inform him to inform me that the account cant be downgraded as it had amount owing to it.
So FNB refuse to downgrade or close account that owing the money and does not froze the account but add monthly account fee on the account that already owes money?

The reason I wanted to downgrade this account was because the fees were unreasonable high for me and I couldn't afford them. But FNB decided that they will not downgrade or close this account and they will keep charging monthly account fees for this account.
In other words FNB couldn't close or downgrade the account because they are making money from fees if they do downgrade it they wouldn't make money out of it.
My understanding was that I will downgrade this account so that it does not keep adding exorbitant account fees, and still be liable for the amount the account was owing at the point. By saying the cannot downgrade it cause in was in arrears is unfair to me, because every month I will loose money and FNB will make money through banking fees.

Had the account been downgraded I would have paid whatever the amount was owed to it and close it, by refusing to downgrade they were making sure they generate maximum account fees from it and make it impossible for me to downgrade or close.

This is ********* way of making money, I'm not against paying fees for the service I received from using the account, but charging me account fees for inactive account is a day light *******.

I will await your respond.

I went to the branch on Saturday 30th May to settle outstanding balance and close this account after the FNB re-adjusted the balance on this account.
The consultant requested me to bring proof of address, this was not communicated to me when customer service contacted me to inform to go and pay this balance asap before it could attract fees again.
Why FNB want to vet me for closing an account by asking for proof of address? I mean I'm closing the account not downgrading it, which to understanding it means the end of relationship between myself and the bank, but why they need proof of address to do that?
If proof of address is so essential to close an account, why customer service did not tell me to carry it with me when I go to the branch?
If this proof of residence is a requirement why doesn't FNB create a platform on the internet banking for us to upload it, I mean I receive all statements via email.

What this means is that I have to go out there face Covid19 head on trying to find internet café that is open which can print this proof of residence so that I can go present it to consultant so that they may allow me to pay balance to this account and close it.
Or is this another way of the bank to frustrate me so that I don't end up closing this account, so that it may generate more money for them through banking fees, God knows how much this fees will be by the time I'm able to print POA (Proof of Address)
