Complaint Against FNB / Debt Collection Harassment

I have been experiencing ongoing harassment from FNB and/or its debt collection representatives regarding an individual named “Andries,” despite the fact that:

This cellphone number that FNB is contacting me on has been mine for approximately 18 years. I have repeatedly had no association whatsoever with this person. I am not Andries. I have no responsibility for this individual’s accounts, debts, or financial obligations.

Despite this, I continue receiving repeated:

Threatening SMS messages Credit score warnings Settlement demands Collection calls Payment demands for accounts that do not belong to me

The messages include alarming statements such as:

“Your credit score is at risk” “Pay your FNB PLN TODAY” “Limited settlement offers”

This conduct is unacceptable, invasive, and constitutes persistent harassment.

My concerns: Failure to properly verify debtor contact details Repeated use of my personal number without consent Harassment over third-party debt Potential POPIA violations through misuse of my personal data Emotional distress and disruption caused by repeated threats and unwanted contact

My demands:

Immediate removal of my cellphone number from all FNB and associated debt collection databases linked to “Andries” Written confirmation that my number has been permanently deleted from these records Immediate cessation of all SMS, calls, WhatsApp messages, or other communication regarding this matter Investigation into how my number was incorrectly associated with another person’s debt Assurance that my personal information is handled in compliance with POPIA

I am beyond frustrated at being repeatedly harassed for someone else’s financial obligations and expect immediate corrective action.

If this matter is not resolved urgently, I will escalate it further through:

The Information Regulator (POPIA) NCR (National Credit Regulator) Consumer Protection authorities

This level of negligence is unacceptable from a major financial institution.

Despite already receiving repeated collection SMS messages and calls regarding another individual named “Andries,” the harassment has continued.

I have now received yet another SMS stating:

“Your outstanding FNB Premier Credit Card has been handed over to Barrett & Associates for collection…”

The problem is:

  • I do NOT own an FNB credit card
  • I am NOT the person referenced
  • This cellphone number has belonged to me for approximately 18 years
  • I have repeatedly informed callers that they have the wrong number

Yet FNB and/or their debt collectors continue sending threatening legal collection messages to my personal cellphone number.

This is now beyond simple administrative error and amounts to ongoing harassment and misuse of personal information.

The continued threats of “legal action” for debts that are not mine are unacceptable and deeply concerning from a major financial institution.

I again demand:

  • Immediate removal of my number from all databases linked to this account
  • Immediate cessation of all calls and SMS messages
  • Written confirmation that my details have been deleted
  • An explanation as to how my personal cellphone number became associated with another person’s debt profile

Should this continue, I will escalate the matter formally with the Information Regulator under POPIA, as well as the National Credit Regulator and other consumer protection bodies.

FNB has now closed previous complaints and advised that my details were being removed from their systems, yet this morning I AGAIN received another debt collection SMS relating to a person identified as “Andries.”
The SMS states:
“Hi Andries, Don’t miss your chance to WIN a R1000 Grocery Voucher, Simply pay R50 towards your FNB loan today…”
This proves that despite assurances from FNB, my cellphone number is STILL actively linked to another person’s debt collection profile and/or automated systems.
For clarity:
  • There is no “Andries” associated with my cellphone number
  • This number has belonged exclusively to me for approximately 18 years
  • I do not have the referenced FNB loan or accounts
  • I am not the debtor being pursued
I have now received:
  • Repeated threatening SMS messages
  • Legal collection threats
  • Collection calls
  • Credit-related warnings
  • Ongoing harassment for another person’s debts
What is most concerning is that this continues AFTER FNB advised the matter had been resolved.
This demonstrates either:
  • Serious failures in FNB’s internal systems and collections processes; or
  • Failure to properly remove and update personal information despite customer complaints.
At this stage I seriously question FNB’s POPIA compliance and handling of personal data.
I again demand:
  • Immediate permanent removal of my cellphone number from ALL FNB and third-party collection systems
  • Written confirmation from senior management once completed
  • An explanation as to why contact continued after the complaint was supposedly closed
This ongoing harassment is unacceptable.

UPDATE 3 – FNB Confirmed Removal of My Number, Yet the Harassment Continues

On 28 May 2026, FNB's Personal Loans Department responded in writing and stated:

"Please note that as per Legal department your cellphone number has been removed from the customer's profile."

Based on this response, one would reasonably expect the matter to have been resolved.

However, this morning I received yet another debt collection SMS stating:

"Hi Andries, To avoid legal action and adverse listing immediate payment required on your FNB Loan..."

The SMS was sent directly to my cellphone number despite FNB's written confirmation that my number had supposedly been removed.

This raises a very simple question:

How can FNB claim that my number was removed from the debtor's profile while debt collection messages continue to be sent to the same number?

For clarity:

• I am not "Andries"
• I do not have the referenced FNB loan
• I do not hold the account being pursued
• This cellphone number has belonged exclusively to me for approximately 18 years

Over the past weeks I have received multiple collection messages, payment demands, settlement offers, adverse credit warnings, and threats of legal action relating to another person's debt.

The issue is no longer merely an incorrect contact detail. The issue is that FNB has now confirmed in writing that corrective action was taken, yet the unwanted communications continue.

I am requesting that FNB provide a proper explanation as to why these communications are still being sent after the complaint was supposedly resolved and the number allegedly removed.

At this stage, it appears that the complaint was either closed prematurely or the corrective action was never fully implemented across all FNB and third-party collection systems.

I have retained copies of the emails and the latest SMS as evidence.

UPDATE 4 – FNB's Attorneys Are Still Contacting Me After FNB Confirmed My Number Was Removed
Despite FNB previously confirming in writing that Legal had removed my cellphone number from the customer's profile, I have now received yet another communication regarding the same matter.
Today's SMS reads:

"Mnr Andries Hough. Please urgently call us on *** re your FNB C/Card account. Barrett & Assc Legal Ref FNBL202657"

This is now becoming increasingly concerning.

Not only am I still receiving debt collection messages after FNB advised that my number had been removed, but I am now receiving direct communications from a legal collections firm regarding an FNB credit card account that does not belong to me.

For the record:

• I am not Andries Hough.
• I have never been Andries Hough.
• I do not hold the referenced FNB credit card account.
• This cellphone number has belonged to me for approximately 18 years.
• FNB has already acknowledged the error and advised that my number had been removed.

Yet the messages continue.

This raises serious questions:

  1. Why are Barrett & Associates still contacting me if FNB removed my number from the debtor's profile?
  2. Was the information ever actually removed from all collection systems?
  3. Were third-party legal service providers informed of the correction?
  4. Why was the complaint considered resolved when collection activity is clearly continuing?
At this stage I have received:
• Debt collection SMS messages
• Settlement offers
• Threats of legal action
• Adverse credit listing warnings
• Requests to contact attorneys
• Communications relating to loans and credit cards that do not belong to me

The issue is no longer an isolated administrative error. It appears to be a systemic failure to update debtor information across FNB's collections and legal recovery channels despite repeated complaints and written assurances.

I am requesting urgent intervention from FNB senior management and a full investigation into why my cellphone number continues to be used after multiple confirmations that it had been removed.

All emails, SMS messages, and complaint references have been retained as evidence.

UPDATE 5 – FNB Closed the Complaint, Yet I Am Still Receiving Credit Card Collection and Settlement Demands

I am once again updating this complaint because the harassment continues despite FNB repeatedly advising that my cellphone number had been removed from the debtor's profile.

Today I received yet another SMS, this time offering a settlement on an alleged FNB Premier Credit Card account:

"You qualify for a massive 70% discount on your outstanding FNB Premier CREDIT CARD also payable over 2-3 consecutive months. Reply with your email address for a settlement quote or call ***. Email ***, always quote ***."

For clarity:

• I do not have an FNB Premier Credit Card.
• I am not the debtor being pursued.
• I am not Andries Hough.
• This cellphone number has belonged exclusively to me for approximately 18 years.

What makes this even more concerning is that FNB previously advised in writing that Legal had removed my cellphone number from the customer's profile and that the matter had been resolved.

Since receiving those assurances, I have continued to receive:

• Loan collection messages
• Credit card collection messages
• Threats of legal action
• Adverse credit listing warnings
• Attorney collection notices
• Settlement offers

The latest message from Barrett & Associates confirms that my cellphone number is still being used within debt recovery and legal collection processes despite FNB's repeated assurances that corrective action was taken.

At this point, the issue is not merely an incorrect contact detail. It is the continued use of my personal cellphone number for debt collection activities after FNB acknowledged the error and advised that my information had been removed.

I am requesting that FNB's senior management investigate why these communications continue and provide a detailed explanation of how my number remains active within their collections and legal recovery systems.

I have retained copies of all emails, SMS messages, complaint references, and FNB responses as evidence.

UPDATE 6 – "Final Chance" Legal Threats Continue Despite FNB Confirming My Number Was Removed
I am now at a loss for words.

After multiple complaints, multiple emails, and written confirmation from FNB that Legal had removed my cellphone number from the debtor's profile, I have once again received another debt collection SMS.
Today's message states:

"Final chance to Activate your outstanding FNB Premier Credit Card by making a payment of R100 on/before 26 June 2026 to prevent account from escalating for further legal action..."

The SMS further instructs me to contact Barrett & Associates and references account number FNBL202657.

Let me again be absolutely clear:

• I do not have an FNB Premier Credit Card.
• I am not the account holder being pursued.
• I am not Andries Hough.
• This cellphone number has belonged exclusively to me for approximately 18 years.
• FNB previously confirmed in writing that my number had been removed from the customer's profile.

Yet despite these assurances, I continue receiving:

• Collection demands
• Settlement offers
• Attorney correspondence
• Threats of legal action
• Credit card payment demands
• Loan payment demands

The latest SMS specifically threatens escalation for further legal action if payment is not made.
How is it possible that I am still receiving legal collection messages after FNB advised that my number had been removed and the matter had been resolved?

At this stage, I no longer believe this can be described as a simple administrative error. The ongoing communications suggest that either:

  1. The corrective action was never fully implemented; or
  2. FNB's third-party collection and legal service providers were never properly updated.

I am requesting a response from senior management explaining why these messages continue to be sent despite repeated assurances that the matter was resolved.

I have retained every SMS, every email, every complaint reference, and every written response from FNB. The evidence clearly shows that the communications have continued long after FNB advised that my details had been removed.

This matter remains unresolved.
