Closing the Bank Account of my late father.

My father died in 2021. 6 Months after his death we noticed that there were still deposits made into his account. After many queries, we found that the deposits were two small life / retirement policies belonging to my mother, that was still being paid into my late father’s account. (The account they shared for many years.)

I visited FNB branches with my 77 year old mother a few times to try and close the bank account and ask for assistance to try and recuperate my mother’s retirement deposits.

FNB referred us to the executor of the estate to give instruction for the account to be closed. The Executor said she did issue closure of the FNB account when my father passed (as it was frozen), and contacted FNB again.

Since 2021, the payments into my late father’s account have accumulated to R28 000 and we have not yet been able to get the account closed so the money can be paid over the executor of my father’s estate.

The executor has been following up weekly, but no luck and no response yet, just endless time spent on call center calls.

Meanwhile my mom needs the money that was left for her by my dad’s policies, for medical expenses.

I don’t understand why a bank account will accept deposits after it was frozen at the time of passing?

I don’t understand how long it can take to close a FNB bank account on the instruction of an executor?

I don’t know why my 77 year old mother should be fighting to get her own money back after supporting the bank for most of her life?
