Closing a bank account when out of the country

I live in the UK and as I have sold my property in SA, and cancelled my policies, I want to close my bank account with FNB. I have transferred most of the money to a Bidvest account, but there is still R100.00 in an FNB 32 day call account. FNB will not allow me to close the account via email or fax, but say I can phone them, and they will do all the necessary profile checks. This will cost more than the R100.00 and all I want is for them to close the account to avoid any further bank fees and charges, but I cannot get them to do so.
I was asked to attach a signed letter instructing the bank to close the account and they will be able to act on this instruction \as First National Bank has procedures and process to be followed."I did that and now they have a different story:-
Thank you for your prompt response regarding the closure of your accounts"
