cheque payment on a credit card. for several thousand rand

Wanted to pay a credit card payment. After waiting and being served, only to be told they dont accept cheque payments on a credit card. Why not? Surely the cheque goes through the normal clearance procedure, so you cannot use card before the cheque clears? I also dont want to carry that type of cash on me, i dont have access to internet banking...
