Business Account Frozen Over Small Transaction With No Engagement

I am extremely disappointed with how FNB handled a recent matter involving my business account.

Our account was frozen without prior engagement after two small payments totalling approximately R760 were flagged as potentially suspicious. These payments were for a legitimate service rendered by our company to a client.

What is concerning is that the account was restricted before any attempt was made to contact us to verify the transaction, despite this being a business account that receives payments from clients for services rendered.

All requested documentation was submitted promptly, including the invoice, client details, and communication confirming the work requested. However, there has been no acknowledgement or meaningful update from the ***** team, while our account remains restricted.

Freezing a business account has real operational consequences, as it prevents normal business activity and affects our ability to receive client payments.

It is also unreasonable to expect businesses to investigate the source of funds of every client before accepting payment. That is simply not practical for normal commercial transactions.

While I fully support banks investigating genuine ***** risks, there should be basic client engagement and proportionality, especially when dealing with legitimate businesses and relatively small transaction values.

At the moment, the process appears unnecessarily disruptive and poorly communicated.

Reviewer Update
I previously raised a complaint regarding FNB freezing our business account after two small payments totaling approximately R760 were flagged as suspicious.

FNB requested supporting documentation, which we submitted immediately on 9 March 2026, including the invoice, client details, and communication confirming the service requested.

However, it has now been more than 10 days (7 working days) and the ***** investigation team has still not acknowledged receipt of our response or provided any update on the investigation.
The only response we have received from FNB was on HelloPeter, where customer support indicated that an email had been sent. This does not address the issue that the ***** team itself has not confirmed receiving our documentation or communicated any timeline for resolving the matter.

Our concern is simple:
  • This is a business account
  • The transaction value under investigation is less than R800
  • All requested information was submitted promptly
  • Yet the account remains frozen with no communication from the ***** team

Freezing a business account for an extended period without proper engagement directly disrupts normal business operations.

We fully support banks investigating genuine ***** risks, but the lack of communication and the length of this process are unacceptable.

At this stage we simply want:
  • Confirmation that our documents were received
  • A clear update on the investigation
  • A timeline for when the account will be restored

At the moment it unfortunately appears that the only way to get a response from FNB is by posting on HelloPeter, which should not be necessary.
