Bad service
I had a credit card with the FNB in 2008 and have since found out the following information as I am wanting to apply for a home loan:
According to my telephonic conversation of this morning I have ascertained the following information: • Last payment on the account was made in September 2008 • Handed over to Legator McKenna Attorneys in 2011 • Legator McKenna Attorneys closed the file and debt written off by FNB in 2015 as per the Prescription Act of 1969
I was not contacted regarding this via telephone, email or the postal system with regards to this in any shape or form.
I was married to my ex-husband at the time and we got divorced on 06 July 2009. We had a verbal agreement that he would settle all debt. He claimed he had paid off the debt, which I now cannot verify as he passed away in May 2020. I did not have access to his banking accounts and as such it is impossible that I can supply any proof of payments for the accounts mentioned above. No financial institution will reveal financial information of their clients to a third party never mind the fact the person is deceased and we were legally divorced in 2009. All the aforementioned can be confirmed with the Department of Home Affairs if need be.
First National Bank in all these years never informed me or contacted me, even though I have had the same contact number since 2004, that there was any amounts outstanding. I must admit, I am rather taken aback since this does go back to 2008 and I do not see the rationality in continuously holding this against me now considering my credit score with the credit bureaus and the way I currently conduct my finances.
It is not only common knowledge and in the public domain that records should be kept for a period of three years. The proof of payments you are looking for in this instance are almost 13 years old and it is not farfetched that I would not have these documents anymore. As such, what the bank is asking is a “mission impossible” as my ex-husband is now deceased and he claimed he would pay them off and never supp**** proof of payment in any form.
I would like to request that this be removed from my name within the bank as I am in the process of wanting to apply for a home loan and this is hindering the process.
Thank you for writing to us. We acknowledge receipt of your complaint.
The credit card debt has been written off due to prescriptions. The bureau details has been update accordingly and your name has been removed from the bureau. New credit cannot be grant by FNB when there has been a write off due to prescription. Thank you for writing to us. We acknowledge receipt of your complaint.

I entirely disagree with this as it pertains to 13 years ago. If this is the treatment I am going to receive from a prestigious banking institution then I will rather close my account and go elsewhere!!!
I AM OFFICIALLY DONE WITH FNB!!!!
