Available Balance and pending payments...

I'm getting very frustrated on how FNB manages payments and how they don't correlate to online statements and mobile banking app.

Some payments take up to a week to come off my account, and when it does I sometimes go into negative. When I check my funds before a purchase it informs me of my available balance, But without me knowing there's pending items still. This needs to be fixed and be more transparent and reflect to what I actually have available...

Then when I'm it this problem they still take off what I think is a penalty of R27.50. I rectified and made payment asap but now this penalty has put me into negative again... am I going to get another penalty for this? Makes no sense...

In general everything else from FNB has been great but this needs fixing! and ASAP!

Good Day Richard ,

Thank you for logging your complaint to us.

When you use your card to swipe at a merchant or service provider you will receive an SMS notification advising that the amount swiped is reserved for purchases. If it is above the in contact notification default threshold (R100.01c or an amount you may have chosen for yourself) and your available balance will reduce. The amount will not show on your account transaction history immediately until the merchant banks the transaction. Its up to the Merchant to bank ASAP. Normally most Merchants bank on month end in bulk. Once the transaction is banked the amount will reflect on your account. It is for this reason that transactions can sometimes take a few days to go through your account which goes into a pending status and the bank unfortunately has no control how often a merchant chooses to do their banking.

It is always advisable to retain a record of your purchases in order to ensure that you are aware of what you have spent from the balance that you originally had in your account and thus to ensure that you do not leave your account overdrawn which than causes penalties on a negative account balance.

It's not good enough honestly. No other banks I've been with had this issues, aside from one in the UK when I was over there and it was the same frustrating issue before I moved to another bank. My partner is with Capitec, ABSA and recently moved to Nedbank. And no such issues like this. When you check your account it shows correctly what is available, and if there's not enough to come off for what ever reason it's declined and not added this this pending list. Now I have to pay from another account to rectify this and likely going to receive another penalty while I wait for it to reflect into the account. I'm sorry I actually just can't continue to bank with FNB as I know this is going to do this every month. After posting this complaint I realized I need to change banks.

Just want to update you guys. Yet again I'm likely about to hit same issue. Weekend I transferred cash from saving to main account. Then made a purchase, of an amount I right now can't recall (roughly R170 I'm guessing). Check my balance today and says the amount available is same as before I made a purchase on Saturday at Pick n Pay. Nothing is showing up under pending and my balance shows the full amount as I just said. How is one supposed to monitor their cash flows when pendings don't show up correctly. Day before pay day and I want to go get lunch but have no idea what my spending should be. But don't bother replying, I had a nice gentleman call me about a month ago after my first complaint and wasn't much help, he did say the charge would be reversed but don't see a reversal, I might be missing it though. Regardless of his helpfulness and professional manner, Will give it to you that it kept me from changing banks to see how it goes, I'm back at the same situation again. This weekend I'll be closing my account and moving to another bank. I'm sorry but I just can't continue like this. As a bank, you don't make it easy to manage and monitor money.
