Absurd Bank Charges on a cheque account

Since 2015 i have not used a cheque account i had with FNB. I once went to FNB The Glen to request that the account be closed since i no longer wanted to bank with FNB.

Today when i called the call centre to enquire about my Housing finance I have with FNB i was shocked to learn that the cheque account has a balance due by me of over R6000.

I have been trying to call ********** to enquire but this line requires that I key in my card number which I no longer have because I no loger bank with FNB.

For bank charges to come to R6000 its really shocking. What measures does FNB have to notify us of such charges and how are we assisted to avoid such unneccesary cost since i was not aware of this. I do not accept liability of the bank charges.
