A Masterclass in Incompetence: My Experience with a Bank That Can’t Even Update a Paid Loan

If I sound furious, it’s because I am.

In 2023, I took out a temporary loan. I paid it off in full in November 2023. The bank itself recognizes that the loan is settled. On paper, inside their own system, it’s closed. Done. Finished.

Except it isn’t, not where it actually matters.

Because the bank never bothered to update TransUnion, my credit report still reflects the loan as unpaid. And as a result, my credit score has been quietly tanking for years over a debt that does not exist. I have been living with the consequences of their administrative failure while they sit comfortably behind their systems.

I spent the majority of last year calling and sending emails. Repeating myself. Explaining the same situation over and over. Each time I walked away with nothing but frustration. No resolution. No accountability. No urgency. Just vague assurances and the feeling that no one actually cared enough to fix it.

Let me be clear: I did everything right. I borrowed responsibly. I paid on time. I settled the loan in full. And yet I am the one chasing emails, attaching credit reports, and begging for a letter of payment, for a loan the bank already acknowledges is paid.

It is beyond absurd.

This isn’t a complex legal dispute. It’s a status update. A basic administrative function. The kind of thing a competent financial institution should handle automatically and accurately. Instead, I’ve had to escalate through departments just to get an email address to request documentation that should have been issued proactively.

The damage isn’t theoretical. A credit score affects real opportunities — housing, financing, trust. And mine has been dragged down because the bank couldn’t perform the simplest part of its job.

What angers me most is not even the original mistake. Mistakes happen. It’s the complete lack of urgency and ownership in correcting it. I’ve been left to carry the burden of their failure, as if my time, my stress, and my financial standing are disposable.

If this is how they handle something as straightforward as updating a paid loan, it genuinely makes me question the competence of the entire institution.

I paid my debt. They didn’t do their job.

And I’m the one paying for it.
