Paint the ceiling instead of fixing the underlying problem
I needed to speak URGENTLY to a manager as the matter is URGENT. A manager was not available to assist.
Please listen to the voice recordings and then respond.
After the storm there was leaking in my kitchen.
They sent an assessor to determine whether it was caused by storm damage or neglect on part of the previous owners.
No one got back to me. I had to call to ask about the status of my claim. Which was also a bit of a shocker.
They said they had decided to settle - approx R6 000.
I said - no where am I going to get someone to fix my roof for R6 000 in Johannesburg? She never said that the assessor couldn't find the damage to the roof! Not once!
Well my husband and I found it and made the assumption that the assessor must have found it too. There is damage to the board on the side of the house where the main house meets the granny flat.
That is where the water was coming in. Common sense right?
It wasn't there before either and it was a bad storm as per my nanny. I later heard there was a tornado not too far away.
When the guy arrived at my house this morning I asked him so what all are you going to be doing today? He said paint the ceiling and replace the cornices and ceiling boards. I SAID NOOOO. How is that going to fix the problem?
That just means that on the weekend when it rains a bit heavy again I will need to claim again!
I spoke to a claims consultant - I was irate with him as I don't want someone to just paint the ceiling - they need to fix it too. No manager was available to tell me what to do.
I phoned the guy tasked with making it look pretty and not fixing the underlying cause- he said he was not asked to fix the hole. So I told him that he is wasting his time then as he'll have to do it all over again.
It makes sense that there has to be an underlying cause. Water doesn't fall through a roof that has no problems. How is that logical?
I asked First for Women to fix the roof - as in do it properly so that if there is a future roof claim I don't get blamed for not doing it properly when the claim was settled. This is not my idea of doing a proper job.
I still don't know what to do. Can someone with a logical brain please give me proper advise / options or I am going straight to the Ombudsman!
If it was a choice between making the roof pretty or R6000 I think I would have begrudgingly accepted the R6 000 as that is still a step above a paint job.
Light rain doesn't get in which tells me that the rain blows into the ceiling from the hole during bad or windy storms.
Please all I wanted is that someone comes and fixes the underlying problem and then paints / makes the ceiling pretty again. This doesn't make any sense and I don't want to put in multiple claims for something that can be avoided by doing the right thing now.
Please call the guy that is there now and ask him to fix the side of the roof where the hole is.
