I rented a car from First Car Rental in Johannesburg. When collecting the car they just handed the keys over to me and said I will find the car in booth so-and-so. When returning the car they suddenly discovered a near-invisible little dent and they deducted money for repairs. This "dent" was not caused by me and at night the car was locked up in a garage. I lodged a complaint and asked for all relevant documentation. I then discovered that they make you sign off at the counter that there are no defects on the car WITHOUT YOU EVEN HAVING SEEN THE CAR! I expected that there would be a person at the car that would go over the car together with me and then when we both agree on the condition of the car to sign it off together. When I collected the car I did not see anything because I just got into the car to drive off and did not inspect it thoroughly. The dent is so small that it is very hard to find in any case. I think it is ******** to have a customer sign off that a car has no defects without him/her even having the opportunity to see or inspect the car. Their inspector should have pointed out the defect or no defect. I am not sure if I would have seen that near-invisible dent by myself in any case. You may say I should not have signed the form but when you pick up a car you are normally in a hurry and you just sign wherever they tell you to sign without querying. You do expect an inspection of the car when you actually pick up the car and never expected that you sign off on the condition of the car without even seeing it.
