The Fire Room is over rated

The Fireroom CASTLE GATE: From the start it seemed like the communication in the restaurant between the staff was not working. We book a table a week in advance for a medium sized group, when we got there, even though the restaurant was pretty empty, they had not set up the table so we waited out side for them to do that. Because they do not serve alcohol, I would suggest they give out a beverage menu since we had no idea what was available to order. The waiters did not come back to offer more water and a bottle of water goes for R48. So over priced especially if you are not selling wine or any other alcoholic drinks. A waiter comes to the table to do recommendations, this is a great way to show the customers what you have since the menu is large and the dishes are out of the ordinary. However, why send the waiter out to do recommendations if you do not have that dish in stock? The Dim Sum (Gao) dishes were out of stock as well as the Hong Kong Pear dish recommended to us. Also no Oysters in stock. We ordered, only for the waiters to come back to the table multiple times to offer substitutes for what we had ordered since it was out of stock. When starters arrived, one couple’s food did not come, only to afterwards be told that was out of stock too. Shame they had to sit there for a while hungry watching everyone else eat. So they at least got a portion of sushi on the house as an apology. It was very clear that they were spinning even though the entire top floor was empty and it was just our table seated there. I quickly figured out the Vegetarian & Vegan options as VERY LIMITED. I watched my Vegan sister eat Avo Maki whilst everyone else had an abundance of choice. I ordered the Veg Thai Curry, very disappointing. They had basically combined coconut cream with green peppers, carrots & broccoli and called it a R115 Curry. The vegetables weren’t even cooked all the way through. There are so many other amazing Asian Curries available around Pretoria, I would never order that again, I could’ve made it better myself. For dessert I ordered the Sorbet, again disappointing, just intensely sweet syrup over ice. One flavour was frozen in shards and the other was a goo like mess. It was a waste of money. The signature sushi on the menu did look great, some of the others at the table ordered that. I would recommend the springbok carpaccio rolls to people that eat meat, it looked like the most thought through thing on the menu. All in all, it was an expensive excursion that I wouldn’t recommend because the place is average. Their location is cool though, I hope the can work on these things because it could be a great place. The interior design is nice too.
