Loan R15k but must repay R42k?

After begging to get a statement for years, I finally got one. Now I want to ask: How can it be legal? I loaned R15,000 on 10/02/2015. I have already paid R33,000 on this loan. YES R33,000!!! But, I still owe nearly R11,000 before it is settled??? Yes, I know there were about 5 months in the 3 years that I could not pay the monthly premium, but SERIOUSLY... I loan R15,000 and must repay R42,000??? That is nearly THREE times the loan amount!!!! This is ********!
