Overcharging and Incompetence
On 5 Sept 2015 I ordered supplements from a USA company at for an amount of $60. I chose to have it sent by courier for a further $50. The courier happened to be Fedex Express. The parcel landed at the Fedex offices in Cape Town 3 days later on Sept 8th 2015. I was contacted by Fedex on Sept 9th for my ID number and Importers Code which I supp**** immediately by email. I received a quote from a Unealia Adolph of the payment due before release, an amount of R488 which seemed a bit excessive on a parcel valued at $60 (R840 at R14 to the dollar). On 10 Sept, Ms Adolph sent me an email confirming that Fedex would send me banking details as soon as the parcel had been cleared through customs. On 14Sept, Fedex (Rudy Subaya) sent me an amended quote of R913 for Vat and duties to be paid before the parcel would be delivered. I paid the amount and the parcel was delivered later the same day. On later inspection of the documentation, I discovered Fedex had incorrectly used pounds instead of dollars for their calculation, had charged R154 for 'processing' and that a R170 'port detention' fee was charged without the parcel being opened by customs. My email complaining was not answered.
