Con the consumer

Europcar Invoices - ********** 6. Well I rented a car. Paid a R 3000 deposit and I was told in 3 working days the deposit will be paid back to me. Providing filled up and all in order and km's not exceeded. I have a debit card so may take 7 days. Then I receive an invoice charging me R 85 because i dont owe them any money. The charge description is document handling fee. When I phone the customer care centre they say that it is standard practice and it is stated on document I signed. The reason is to store documents in terms of the Consumer Protection Act. Is it fair that I as the consumer must bear the storage cost? Secondly is R 85 fair? I say not. its and absolute *******. Well I vote with my voice and feet. Europcare live up to the title con the consumer. Bye guys you lost a consumer. Hope many more losses to follow.

Reviewer Update

Thank you Calvin. I was informed by an employee of Europcar that The quote and contract state that this fee will be charged(1). Further, it was stated that the amount is not excessive(2) and that the charge is a practice in the whole industry(3). The charge was explained as a charge because the Consumer Protection Act require documents to be kept(4).

My reply in short is as follows:

(1) If something is wrong disclosure does not mean that the charge is correct. I in any case dispute the facts

(2) The amount is small but I am sure it is excessive and will ask for the relevant proof in terms of the Protection of Information Act

(3)That it is the norm in the Industry. Well if a norm is wrong it remains wrong. Collusion between businesses in terms of tenders is wrong and huge fines are paid. If there is an undesireable business practice in an industry it needs to be stamped out. I will approach the consumer commissioner to declare this practice as such.

(4) It is absurd that the consumer must foot the bill for companies to treat customers fairly. When it is allowed that compliance to legislation can be offset to the consumer by way of an additional "tax" (Charge) then we are on a dangerous path as a society. It cannot be.

It seems this matter is more serious than what I expected and the involvement of the Consumer Ombud and the Competition commission needs to be urgently sought. I will do that. I also feel that Europcar contravened the Banking Act and as such will also approach the Banking Ombud.

This is a disservice done to the consumer and must be eradicated sooner than later. Even in the unlikely event that amount is refunded these actions I suggest should continue. I am in search for consumer justice and not a mere R 85.

Hope other consumers join me for a class action. My email address is ********** for consumers also agrieved to contact me.
