Bogus 'refuelling charge' = ****
I was recently billed an amount of R318-20, supposedly for refuelling, plus a 'refuelling service fee' of R20-00 (this would have equated to at least half a tank of petrol for the vehicle in question!). However, I had previously returned the vehicle with a full tank of petrol, which was confirmed by Europcar's agent who received the vehicle back at their PE Airport terminus. There was no reason to refuel the vehicle and Europcar’s attempts to charge me for something that was not necessary and/or never done amount to a ****. I followed up with Europcar directly and after having received several generic, computer generated responses, I eventually made contact with Carike Mostert and Debbie Christmas, both of whom promised they'd revert (I was also promised a copy of the refuelling invoice) - needless to say, after 6 days, no invoice and no feedback whatsoever. I have now noticed that this is a common complaint against Europcar on various consumer forums (including Hello Peter) and one shudders to think how much they are able to add to their bottom line by adding a bogus 'refuelling charge' to every second or third customer (probably knowing that 95% of victims won't be prepared to go through the 'schlep' that is necessary to get their money back) ... For what it's worth, my invoice no. is ********** 6 (not that I expect Europcar to take any steps to address my complaint - in this regard, I am quite resigned to issuing summons in the local Small Claims Court and to laying the necessary ******** complaint at the local SAPS, in the absence of satisfactory redress).
