AVOID EUROPCAR AT ALL Cost - A WHOLE DAY FEE FOR 3 MINUTES

This past weekend I booked a car with Europcar from 5pm on Thursday to 5pm on Sunday at Cape Town International.

I deliberately booked this time eventhough I was landing at 3pm on Thursday as I wanted to avoid paying for an additional day.

According to the invoice I just received, I apparently dropped the car off At 4:48pm on Sunday and picked up the car early on Thursday at 4:45pm which meant I went over the booked time by 3 minutes.

Now Europcar wants me to pay a whole day fee for 3 minutes - this is absurd and I will never book a car through them again. I will also be sharing this incident on social media as everyone should know not to support Europcar.

I called Europcar and received reference 632477. I was informed they had logged a call with the branch, which would review the booking and take the necessary actions. They stated my deposit would be refunded minus the additional charge, but the branch would need to process the refund if they deemed it fair.

Attempts to reach the branch went nowhere. It’s astonishing that, in 2024, brands can still get away with treating customers like this. I’m persistent, but how often do they simply count on customers giving up on their refunds and how long will it take to get the money owed to me?

The process should be simple: notify the branch, issue the credit, and return the full deposit. Instead, it feels like they rely on people not following up, allowing them to pocket these incorrect charges.

This experience has made them lose my business for good over one extra day’s fee. I’ll also be warning friends and family—such shortsightedness. A simple 15-30 minute grace period, especially with the rainy-day queues on Sunday and staff showing no urgency, would have kept me happy.

OVER A MERE 3 MINUTES, THEY'VE LOST A CUSTOMER FOR LIFE>

Hi there,

Thank you for your response, but I need further clarity regarding the admin fee. Why should I absorb this cost when the error was on your side? I should be charging you an admin fee for the time I’ve spent on calls and resolving this issue.

The R124 admin fee may not be a large amount compared to the rental, but it’s the principle that matters to me.

Could you please confirm when this amount will be refunded?

Looking forward to your prompt response.
