Booted from flying because we were not informed
Horrible experience from this airline. Booked our honeymoon to Ireland with Ethiopian Airlines. South Africans DO NOT need a Visa for Ireland.
Arrived at check in, only to be told that the Irish Embassy requires proof of address, funds in your bank account, proof of accomodation, etc (basically everything you need for a Visa application). Rushed to the airline's office to try and mail everything to the embassy, but they rejected to approve us boarding.
NOWHERE ON ANY CORRESPONDENCE did this airline inform us that we need to submit such documents to the embassy (although they claim it's been doing so for a year already, and that we should have been informed of it). Thanks for making our honeymoon start an absolute f%&@ up Ethiopian Airlines! Will never fly with you again!
We're still waiting at their office...been waiting for an hour with no news or updates on what will happen. Awesome service guys (NOT!)
- They admit that the airline has been struggling with the Irish Embassy regarding this issue of passengers and getting them boarded for flights to Ireland. It's been a known problem since at least Feb 2019.
- They admit that someone from the airline should have been in contact with us to explain the situation whether on email or by telephone (even though neither of these happened at all).
- As "compensation", they are booking us another flight on to Ireland two days later, but will not be compensating us for all the other losses incurred (car rental, accommodation booked, travelling costs to and from the airport, etc.).
It seems Ethiopian airlines are just washing their hands from this situation, They refuse to compensate us for a problem that they didn't manage correctly: Nowhere did they communicate to the customer of the current situation with the Irish Embassy; nowhere did they give us forewarning that such documentation would be required, and when the embassy refused that we board the flight, the just shrug their shoulders with regard to all the expenses incurred that have been lost on our side.
Our honeymoon has been completely *****ed by this whole experience. I would never recommend Ethiopian Airlines to anybody...
