Maternity Cover

So my medical insurance was active since 1 August 2017 with a waiting period of 12 months for the maternity benefit. I have had no issues thus far and then i found out yesterday that I am about 3-4 weeks pregnant. Immediately today i made contact with them to find out if the birth will be covered.

First I was told they will consult with another department and after a while I had to ask what's the status without the consultant contacting me.

Then i was told that if the birth is before the 31st July it would not be covered and will be for my own account and if i give birth after 1 August then it will be covered.

I got an estimated due date of the 26 July 2018 which means i literally miss the mark by a week and they refuse to help me. Look I understand that the reason for the waiting period is because of people who would take the cover, use the maternity benefit and then cancel but not everyone is that malicious, so I suggested that a document is drawn up for me to sign and state that i will not cancel my cover for at least a year after the baby is born which I think is quite reasonable and this was not even considered.

Already being pregnant is hard because my stress levels are high as to where and how I will now give birth, I had no intention of cancelling and I would have loved to add my baby on as well as my husband and one dependent is currently on my policy.

I think because the difference between getting the cover or not is literally a week or two, they could have met me half way and come up with some sort of solution.

I am in such distress now because firstly the pregnancy wasn't planned and now they wont budge even though it was just a week or so.

My payments has always been on time and I don't abuse the policy
