Vandalism to eskom electricity box

On the morning of 28 February our power went out because of vandalism to the eskom electricity box in the street. The matter was reported the same day by other neighbour's.After contacting eskom on numerous occasions we where without electricity for 6 days.Having to throw away food that was in our fridge .Storing some of my meat by family .When eskom eventually came the thursday late afternoon ,I was asked if eskom didn't inform me that I had to get an affidavit saying that my meter burned. If I don't have it he can't replace my meter. So I had to walk to the police station to get an affidavit. When I came back the gentlemen told me he needs my meter number because he doesn't have mine on his paper.I explained to him that I get my bill via email and that my cellphones battery was flat and charging at my sister's quite far from me.He told me I need to get the number so again I had to walk and go get my phone.Eventually after returning my electricity was reconnected which I was very great full for.My question is ,was it necessary for us to be without electricity for six days?
