Pre-Paid Electricity Units

During the month of July I had bought R400 Pre-paid electricity at Pick n' Pay as usual and when we loaded it into our meter it read around 500 KW of electricity available for the month but last 2 weeks ago we realised that we would run out of electricity before the month ended so we decide to top up with R200. after we had loaded the R200 the meter read around 200KW which would get us through until the month ended.

Yesterday was the end of the month, so I decided to buy R600 of pre-paid electricity, we decided to buy R600 because we realised that like the previous month we dont want to find ourselves topping up again on electricity.

the meter read 81KW just before we loaded the R600 but to our surprise after we loaded the R600 of electricity the meter only read 264KW.

We were very shocked and when we contaccted Eskom, the call centre agent informed us that because we had reached the maximum amount of units for the month, Eskom charges us extra for the units than it did before but if we had bought bought the pre-paid electricity today, the begining of the month; our circle started over and it would have charged us lesser.

I am very disappointed, When I wanted to budget on electricity, I find myself spending so much. This remaining units will only carry us until next week. I bought the prepaid yesterday because we saw that it would not carry us for the rest of the week. The only time I am available to buy it is during the weekend.

How are we as users suppose to know that pre-paid electricity units flactuate, how are we to know that our cycle starts at the beginning of each month.

We will now have to spend over a R1000 on electricity.
