Unfinished Work, Ongoing Defects, and No Accountability

Our Experience with ES Construction I am sharing our experience with ES Construction so that others can make an informed decision before appointing them. ES Construction quoted on our home renovation, which was clearly planned to be completed in two phases. We accepted their quotation in good faith on that basis. However, after completing Phase 1, ES Construction withdrew from Phase 2, leaving our home in an unfinished state. Within a few months of the Phase 1 work being completed, numerous defects began to appear, including: * Cracks in walls. * Cracked floor tiles. * Cornices separating from the walls and ceilings. * Skirtings separating from the floor tiles. * Mosaic tiles in the showers cracking. * Mould developing around timber skirtings, which we believe resulted from the timber not being properly primed and sealed. * Cracks developing in sections of the roof. We immediately raised these concerns with ES Construction. Rather than taking responsibility and arranging an inspection, we were met with an aggressive response from Emmerentia Spies. She later requested a meeting, apologised for her behaviour, and some of the defects were repaired. Unfortunately, those repairs did not resolve the underlying issues. Within approximately a month, additional cracks appeared in the walls, tiles and roof, more cornices separated from the ceilings, and further skirtings lifted away from the floor. We then contacted Des Spies, the owner of ES Construction, and requested that he personally inspect the defects and discuss a way forward. Instead of attending the site, he refused to accept responsibility for the workmanship and declined to rectify the defects. Even after allowing time to pass, we made one final attempt to resolve the matter amicably. We requested, purely as a gesture of goodwill, that ES Construction return to inspect the defects and determine an appropriate solution. That request was refused, with the explanation that they were no longer in town. In our opinion, the most disappointing aspect of this experience has not only been the quality of the workmanship but also the complete lack of accountability once problems arose. Every contractor can encounter issues on a project. What distinguishes a reputable contractor is their willingness to stand behind their work and resolve genuine defects. Sadly, that was not our experience. The photographs attached speak for themselves. They show the condition of our home following the work completed by ES Construction. We have retained photographs and written correspondence documenting the issues and our repeated attempts to have them resolved. If you are considering appointing ES Construction, our advice is to carry out thorough due diligence, insist on clear warranties and after-sales support, and satisfy yourself that you are comfortable with the level of workmanship and service you can expect.
