Emirates refuses to refund me for a cancelled ticket

I recently booked a flight to Munich on Emirates for my mother and myself. She is elderly and dearly wanted to visit her friends and family before she became too old to travel, and I paid for this trip using my bank's loyalty package. I received a ticket stating that the flight could be cancelled 5 hours before departure and that an appropriate cancellation fee would be levied. Nowhere in the terms and conditions was it mentioned that the ticket is non-refundable.

Unfortunately my mother has suddenly been diagnosed with a thrombosis in her leg and, upon doctor's orders, is not allowed to fly. I have a copy of her medical report as well as a letter from her doctor stating that she is unable to fly for three months. I submitted these documents and requested a refund for the flight that is due to leave on 22 August.

Emirates flat out REFUSED to refund me anything apart from my airport taxes. I cannot believe it. What a greedy bunch of scavengers, interested only in sponsoring football teams and naming stadiums after themselves - I will never fly Emirates again as long as I live as this is the SECOND time they have done this to me.

What happened last time is that they cancelled my flight to Panama City without any reason other than that they were no longer flying to that destination. Consequently, I lost a fortune in onward flights, accommodation and tours that I had pre-booked as non-refundable. I cannot stand Emirates and will always fly Qatar or Etihad instead.
