Dissappointing customer services at CT airport
I had the unfortunate experience of interacting with Bidvest staff working with oversized baggage payment at the Emirates airline checkin desk at Cape Town International airport on Saturday, 21 April between 16h00 and 17h00. They were not willing to disclose their names to me when I asked for it. They were also not wearing identity badges. I believe their names were TJ and Belodine. I got to the airport 3 hours before my flight to ensure a fast check-in as I am emigrating and wanted to spend the last precious hours before my flight with my family. My bags were overweight and I was asked to pay a fee for this which I was happy to do. I went to the Bidvest counter and with another passenger waited 5 minutes before being told by TJ that the system was not working. She proceeded to tell us she had to go to the counter and our card details will have to be shared on the phone in order for the transaction to be completed. I was happy with the alternative arrangement, however she disappeared for about 15 minutes. When I found her at the Emirates check-in counter, and asked her when all will be done. She got aggressive with me and told me I had not listened to her when commanded to wait at the payment counter. This is when I got frustrated and started crying. Long story short, after another 15 minutes, the transaction was not completed and I refused to wait any longer. I mentioned this to the supervisor and she started getting aggressive with me. I was visibly distraught, and mentioned to them that my reaction was due to me emigrating and wanting to spend time with my family and not instead I was making no progress with my checkin status. They acted extremely unprofessionally and unkind, failing to see the reaction their behaviour had on me, the client. While they would not check in my bags until the system would be back online and proof of payment could be printed, they now agreed to check in my bags. All very confusing, frustrating and clearly a huge lack of people s****s on the part of staff serving clients at the international checkin of the best airport in Africa. However, the transaction was still not completed after 40 minutes. Clearly they had no idea how they were wasting my precious time. I have paid for oversized luggage with other airlines before and never have I been this inconvenienced by an airline. Xavier agreed to bring my invoice to the boarding gate. He took me aside and apologized for the situation which I dearly appreciated. He agreed the situation was not dealt with properly. In conclusion, airports are usually a place of goodbyes and hellos. It is already tough enough walking away from your family. An airline’s staff should not be making the experience any more difficult for clients. I hope the ladies involved will be able to act differently in future should something similar occur. Emirates has always been my first choice when flying, I will reconsider this preference going forward as a result of my experience.
