Worst Movers out of 7 used

All promises was empty. We have experienced extreme neglect and damage to our goods, the worst out of 7 companies we have used in the last 10 years, including international movers. It was clear that the packers assigned to our move was either untrained or just did not care at all as they could not even get the basics right. Items was just dumped into half empty boxes, some filled with packaging waste. As a result some of our goods had to be left behind and loose unprotected items rubbed and bumped causing a lot of damage.

On submitting a claim they tell you items is not covered because it was not specifically listed on an inventory and they expect your insurance to cover loss and damage due to their incompetence or for you to just take the loss. No acceptance of responsibility whatsoever. And then they pretend to know more about your own belongings than you do.

If they are to be classified as specialists, it is as specialist destroyers of personal property and goods.

Dear Mr. Taljaard

Receipt of your complaint on Hellopeter.com is acknowledged with thanks. We are very sorry for the damages encountered on your shipment to Australia. Unfortunately, the very nature of household furniture and effects, with the many varying shapes and sizes, provides INHERENT RISKS which, despite the care and attention devoted by our people to the handling of our customers possessions, cannot be eliminated. There is not one removal organisation anywhere in the world which has found a successful formula for the elimination of the risk of damage.

Elliott is proud of the reputation we have established for our superior service but, even we have to admit that damage does sometimes occur . Because of this, it is standard practice, not only in South Africa but also in most countries, to offer, at additional cost, the facility of insurance protection.

I confirm your insurance claim has been assessed by the insurers according to your sum insured values supp**** by you, with many of your items either not insured or grossly under-insured (according to quotations received from you). Claiming for new furniture when the damages are repairable is not how the insurance works and your demands are unfair and unreasonable.

It remains for me to thank you for having used the services of Elliott Mobility and to wish you much joy, happiness and success living in Australia.

With best wishes,

Sincerely,

Brad Barker

Reviewer Update
Dear Mr. Barker,

Thank you for your response.  I have come to expect such a response based on my past and ongoing dealings with your Insurance & Customer Service Manager.  She also chooses NOT to acknowledge that Elliott PE was NEGLIGENT in the way they handled my belongings and chooses to blame me as the customer.

I would like to state again that MARINE INSURANCE IS NOT INTENDED TO COVER CLEAR NEGLIGENCE OF A SPECIALIST SERVICE PROVIDER.

Let me try to explain my accusation of negligence in a simple and easy to understand way:

- Lids of pots and glass bowls was not wrapped separately in paper as is usual practice.  They were just placed upside down on the pot or bowl and scratches and chips resulted from the constant vibrations etc.  EXPERIENCED PACKERS KNOWS NOT TO DO THIS.
- Wooden items was not wrapped in paper or bubble wrap prior to being thrown together in boxes.  They were left unprotected to rub and bump against each other resulting in scratches and dents.  EXPERIENCED PACKERS KNOWS NOT TO DO THIS.
- Our queen mattress was not placed in plastic but rather wrapped in cardboard pieces.  These came apart during transit with the result that the mattress arrived here completely open and unprotected on the container floor.  EXPERIENCED PACKERS KNOWS NOT TO DO THIS.
- Books are not simply dumped into half empty boxes as they fold and tear.  EXPERIENCED PACKERS KNOWS NOT TO DO THIS as books needs to be packed tightly in a box and the box needs to be full to prevent it from collapsing or tearing open under the weight of other boxes.  I have provided you with pictures of the boxes in question.
- Heavy stone ornaments are not placed loosely and unwrapped into boxes containing breakable items.  They tend to fall around breaking the stuff around them.  EXPERIENCED PACKERS KNOWS NOT TO DO THIS.
- Heavy recliner furniture should not be carried on the attached panels but rather on the steel frame the panels are attached to.  The panels are not designed to take the weight of the actual steel frames inside.  EXPERIENCED PACKERS KNOWS NOT TO DO THIS, yet you are trying to blame me for this damage as I have moved before with the furniture in question.  Maybe it did not break last time because the moving company actually knew what they were doing?
- Important belongings would not have to be left behind if packers knew how to 1) Fill a moving box; and 2) knew how to pack items into a container without open spaces everywhere.  EXPERIENCED PACKERS KNOWS NOT TO DO THIS.
- If your packers was as experienced as what was sold to me, they would have known to make sure items are unable to move around in the container during transit.  This would have prevented the snapped off leg of a wooden cabinet.  EXPERIENCED PACKERS KNOWS NOT TO DO THIS.
- Glass fronted picture frames should be wrapped individually in paper and placed vertically in tightly packed boxes.  They should not be placed flat and unwrapped on top of one another at the top of a loosely packed box.  EXPERIENCED PACKERS KNOWS NOT TO DO THIS as pressure from boxes placed on the box in question will break the glass and frames and the frames would be damaged as they are rubbing against one another if unprotected with paper.
- Glass bowls similarly should not be placed loosely at the top of a box where it would experience direct pressure from other boxes placed on top.  EXPERIENCED PACKERS KNOWS NOT TO DO THIS.
- Do you want me to go on in such detail?

In terms of your accusation of me wanting new furniture when mine can be repaired I would like to comment as follows:
- First of all the damage in question is as a result of Elliott's negligence and could have been avoided if your people did their jobs correctly.
- It was not difficult to see that your packers had no idea of duty of care when we started to open boxes.  I have provided some pictures to you already.
- I did not want new furniture as I am happy with what I have.  I sold what I did not want in South Africa prior to moving, hence the 20 and not 40 foot container.
- I have tried numerous times to obtain quotes for repair but was unable as the one and only local (39km away) company failed to show up for the requested quotes.  I have mentioned this to your Customer Services Manager.  The only alternative to me was to get quotes from the local furniture store for similar new pieces.
- We have not lived here for many years so do not know where else to go for quotes other than the Yellow Pages and internet searches.  Your Customer Manager's response to this was to provide details of companies ****m away.  At least my search was in the right area...

In conclusion, thank you for the well wishes but I would like to state that my claim has not been concluded yet.

Best Regards

Pieter Taljaard
