You may not be covered under Ellies R30 000 Surge Protection Warrantee

The “Surge Safe Power Protector Plug” from Ellies states on the box “High surge Protection R30 000 warranty”.

I thought that this was a great cover, so I bought one to try.

I had a few appliances knocked out by lightning at my place in the Karroo and a few appliances burnt at my place in Port Elizabeth due to a power surge.

When I got home and opened the box I realised that, as far as the R 30 000 warranty is concerned, I had wasted my money.

These three exclusions are not stated on the outside of the package. You only find it out once you open the box at home. 1. Not covered if due to a direct lightning strike (I don’t know whether what happened at my place was direct or not), 2. Power imbalance due to loss of neutral. This, I suspect, is what happened in Port Elizabeth when ******* made off with cables from one of our sub-stations. 3. “The property in which the Surge Safe product/s are being used are to be electrically compliant” The only way to prove this is by having a valid electrical certificate. Although most of us live in electrically compliant homes very few of us have valid electrical certificates. Electrical certificates are issued when you buy the property and are only valid for 2 years from issue.

So, if you have a valid electrical certificate, you not looking for cover for direct lightning strikes, loss of a neutral from Eskom, you have kept the original purchase slip and have sent your completed warranty agreement to Ellies within 30 days of purchasing the product, you will more than likely be covered.
