Unsafe Ellies UPS

Be very careful with your Ellies UPS as it might explode! I've bought a few of the 1200W double battery UPS's. I've carefully followed all the instructions and was impressed with all the safety features described in the marketing material. On the 15th of June, with the Eskom load shedding, a user in one of my properties wanted to switch the one UPS on and the one battery exploded right next to her face! Fortunately the unit has a cover and the user didn't get any battery acid on her face, but the battery released a fume in the dark that 'burnt' her face and lips and the battery acid ran all over the carpet and wardrobe. Ellies management wasn't very interested in the case and only responded when pushed. Clearly they're not worried about the safety of their products. We'll report it to the Consumer Commission and the Chief Safety inspector under the Occupational Health and Safety act.
