Why is Edgars forcing me to pay fees?

I have had an account with Edgars for +/- 18 years now. The account is in good standing, and I am a regular customer of the Edcon group.

Recently I received an email advising that in future I will be charged an admin fee for the account because the terms and conditions have changed. In addition, when I queried this with their client service team, I was told that if I don't accept the new terms and conditions, they will close the account. So in short "take it, or leave it".

Is this really how Edgars now treats their loyal and long standing clients? Pathetic serice!

Please note that the service fee will not be levied to your account without your authorisation. Although it has become necessary to charge a service fee, we have taken the plight of our customers into consideration and discounted this fee to R22.80 per month which equates to R273.60 yearly as opposed to the prescribed maximum fee of R60 allowed per month by the NCA (R720 yearly) .
As noted within the letter , your consent will be required when next purchasing in store and should you wish to decline the implementation of the service fee, Edcon reserves the right to action your account accordingly.
You have been a longstanding customer and we thank you for your patronage and hope that you will continue to be part of the Edcon family.
Your reference number is ********** 221/GO.
Kind regards,
Edcon customer experience team,

Hi Edgars
Thank you for the lame, copy + paste response - clearly you have grown weary of typing anything original and didn't pick up your typo's.
Just because your management have made poor investment and strategic choices, which have cost you more does not mean you should now try recoup these expenses from your clientbase.
Shame on you.
