Service fee that is not compulsory cannot be cancelled????

About 3 months back, i purchased some items from Edgars. I was asked to also sign for something which i was not explained about extensively. After checking my statements, i saw charges of R25.08...as absa service fee...not even the R22.80. So after checking with people, i found that this is not a complusory fee. i called in today to have it removed and they said they cannnot. So something that is not complusory cannot be cancelled??? where's the logic in that. my account has been in immaculate condition since inception. I WANT THIS FEE REMOVED.

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. We understand your frustration in this incident however once the service fee is sign we will not be able to cancel the fee as it has become part of the terms and conditions. Kindly note you have signed for the service fee on the 03/09/2016 at Edgars Chatworth

Both Edcon and the credit provider, Absa Bank Ltd have regrettably been compelled to amend our credit agreements to introduce a monthly service fee on our credit accounts. The National Credit Act (NCA) allows for Credit Providers to charge a Service Fee on accounts. This fee is used by the Credit Provider to manage the administration of the Credit Book and other applicable expenses.

Although it has become necessary to charge a service fee, we have taken the plight of our customers into consideration and discounted this fee to R22.80 per month which equates to R273.60 yearly as opposed to the prescribed maximum fee of R60 allowed per month by the NCA (R720 yearly) .

Edcon customer experience team,
