service fee for no added value

I recently purchased clothing from Edgars and bought the goods cash. The attendant asked me to swipe my edgars account card in order for me to get the points. My card balance was zero at this time. Now, when I went again, I was told I have a balance of just over R80 on my account. I was told that this is a compulsory service fee that gets charged per month (of R21 per month) if an account has any balance. Didnt matter how much I fought it, they would not close my account until I paid the outstanding amount.

I feel that Ive been ********** and that all clients gets ripped of by having to pay an additional R21 per month, simply because the account has a balance. In my case the attendant apparently actually put the purchase through my account and then used my cash payment to pay the account again..... Thus, I ended up with a few cents in my balance,

Edgars had the option not to charge clients this service fee, but obviously saw the millions they could make for doing nothing.... Other retailer are not charging this amount or a service fee.

I say good luck to them and all the clients who will realise soon enough what is happening. Hopefully they will all close their accounts as well. Pity the clients will only notice this if they have a low balance.....

I PERSONALLY WILL NEVER SUPPORT EDGARS OR ANY AFFILIATED BUSINESS EVER AGAIN AND I WILL BE SURE TO SPREAD THE WORD!!!!

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. We understand your frustration in this incident however once the service fee has been signed for the service fee forms part of our contract terms. Contracts cannot be changed unilaterally. That means you cannot cancel one of the terms of our agreement without our consent. In addition all customer have received communication that Edcon will now be charging a service fee this was written on you statement a month before Edcon could start charging the service fee on accounts.

Although it has become necessary to charge a service fee, we have taken the plight of our customers into consideration and discounted this fee to R22.80 per month which equates to R273.60 yearly as opposed to the prescribed maximum fee of R60 allowed per month by the NCA (R720 yearly) .

Please note that Edcon was the only Retail company that did not charged a service fee as these fees were waived by Edcon in the past, having taken into consideration the rising costs to provide unsecured credit to our customers, both Edcon and the credit provider, Absa Bank Ltd have regrettably been compelled to amend our credit agreements to introduce a monthly service fee on our credit accounts. The NCA (Act No. 34 of 2005 Section 101(1) (c)) allows credit providers to charge monthly service fees.
