I am a previous Edgars account holder, or so I thought... So the story goes like this:

I had opened an account, fell in the trap of spending "free" money I actually didn't have. I learnt my lesson pretty quickly, and thus opted to pay off my account balance in full and have the whole thing closed. I went to the customer services department of the very same Edgars outlet (Cavendish Square-Cape Town) in which I had opened my account. I told them I wanted to have the whole thing closed and gave them what I owed. From then on, until this very day I have never re-opened an account with them or any other retail store! SCORE!

Howeeeever, it would seem that Edgars was not done with me yet. After living a debt-free life for about 2 years (since 2013 when I "thought" I closed off my account) I started getting calls again (around 2016) from EDCON demanding me for payment on my Edgars account which had not only magically re-appeared from an apparent state of "dormancy", but was also in arrears! I told them then, as I continue to tell them now, (because they are still calling!) that I do not have an account with Edgars. It is mindboggling to me that after having once been an aco**** holder, receiving e-Catalogues and e-Credit statements and the other general 'riff-raff' that comes with being an account holder / member at any of these retail stores nowadays, that after all that had ended (as it should) with the termination of my account in 2013 (or so I thought) that these calls demanding my hard-earned money, would bombard my phone this way, yet not even a single e-Newsletter or catalogue was popping up in my emails, to say/prove that somehow I am this account member they say I am. Yet, they still want this money they say I owe, but cannot prove where these transactions were made and by whom when I tell them that my account has been closed and paid-off a few years prior to these calls.

I was then advised by one of their consultants on one of their many calls to write up an affidavit and have it sent to them. I have done that, however no one is able to tell me how long this process is going to take and who is going to do the necessary investigation of this case.

It is truly disheartening to think that not only may I be a victim of ********** activity, but also that this matter is not treated with the required urgency considering the impact it now has on my financial life. This hanging "debt" which is unknown to me is affecting my credit score and overall credit reputation and can easily blemish any credit evaluation should I require it for buying a car, or property etc.

I genuinely hope this matter will be resolved with the urgency it requires by willing service providers and I can continue to live my debt-free life.

Regards,

Dr. Samke Shandu
