I wanted to buy goods on my Edgars account at Jet stores in Vryheid. I then received a slip from the cashier who told me I have to sign and agree to a service fee of R22/m otherwise I will not be able to buy anything on my account again. I was not happy with that and told her that this cannot be done, but she shrug her shoulders and told me that was a new rule. I contacted the customer care and told them the story, I was then told that the staff member gave me false info, and that the fee would be reverserd and cancelled. When I received the next statement, the fee was debited again. I sent an email regarding this. I received confirmation that the fee will be cancelled. It was on the following statements again!!! Now I get told that this agreement cannot be cancelled nor reversed!! How can I be responsible for false and untrue info given by them.

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. We understand your frustration in this incident however once the service fee has been signed for the service fee forms part of our contract terms. Contracts cannot be changed unilaterally. That means you cannot cancel one of the terms of our agreement without our consent. In addition all customer have received communication that Edcon will now be charging a service fee this was written on you statement a month before Edcon could start charging the service fee on accounts.
Although it has become necessary to charge a service fee, we have taken the plight of our customers into consideration and discounted this fee to R22.80 per month which equates to R273.60 yearly as opposed to the prescribed maximum fee of R60 allowed per month by the NCA (R720 yearly) .
Please note that Edcon was there only Retail company that did not charged a service fee as these fees were waived by Edcon in the past, having taken into consideration the rising costs to provide unsecured credit to our customers, both Edcon and the credit provider, Absa Bank Ltd have regrettably been compelled to amend our credit agreements to introduce a monthly service fee on our credit accounts. The NCA (Act No. 34 of 2005 Section 101(1) (c)) allows credit providers to charge monthly service fees.
