Edgars, insisting that I am deceased, letting us down after 40 years

I have had an Edgars account for more than 40 years. My wife and I therefore make use of the credit facility on a regular basis and we were, generally, always satisfied with the quality and service provided by Edgars. Until recently .... A few months ago, my wife went to the Walmer Park, Port Elizabeth branch to purchase items, as she often does. At the counter the lady cashier entered the details on the computer and then, rather harshly, asked my wife "M'am, where is your husband ?". There were also a number of other clients in the queue who could clearly overhear the lady's strict and loud voice. My wife rep**** that I was at home to which the cashier rep**** that my wife should go straight to Customer Services as there was "an issue" in that, according to their system, her husband was deceased. My wife experienced huge humiliation and embarrassment as the other clients overheard the entire discussion. However, she went to Customer Services and approached one of the consultants where pretty much the same episode repeated with the consultant wanting to know whether or not her husband is still alive. It then transpired that my SA Identity number had apparently been replaced with one starting with 27.... This implies that I am 91 years old. But even more scary, that I had recently died ! Instead, I am 61 years of age and very much alive. My wife could not convince the consultant that I am indeed alive and that my real ID number had obviously been replaced with an incorrect one and the consultant insisted that my wife bring me to Edgars, in person, with my valid ID document. This after more than 40 years of loyal support to Edgars ... now feeling like ********* ! I went with my wife to the branch the following day where I sat with the Customer Services consultant attempting to proof that I was indeed alive. She called Edgars Head Office and they even asked to speak with me on the telephone ! I briefed them and answered all the questions put to me. A few days later, after several calls from Edgars, I received a call confirming that the matter had been settled and that I can continue to use the credit facility. My wife went to the same branch soon after the call only to find that the same issue persists ! A further confirmation then followed that the matter had finally been resolved. Everything went well, since June 2018 when the matter was resolved. We even made several successful purchases and payments since the latter date. However, we went to the same branch of Edgars on Monday, 19 November 2018 and tabled two items on the counter. The cashier entered the details and said that there is a block on the account and that she cannot continue with the transaction. This was once again within hearing distance of another client. We went straight to Customer Services again where we were told that ID number of 27.... reflects on the account and that, according to their records, I am deceased ! Chilling .... After further discussions and phone calls to Head Office, I was told that the matter will be investigated. To date, I have received one phone call from the consultant confirming that the matter is still unresolved. The above matter is utterly frustrating, humiliating and embarrassing to us. My record at Edgars is there for anyone to see. It is being well controlled by my wife and I and we have never been late with any payments. This is why it hurts to be put through this unnecessary ordeal.
