'Customer services' - just another title that means nothing!

Have you ever wondered what the staff at the Edgars customer services do all day? I have, more than once...I sent the accounts department an e-mail on the 22nd of August this year and almost two months later have yet to have the joy of receiving their response. I have subsequently sent e-mails on the 4th, 5th, 12th and 13th of October to the accounts department, customer relations and even to a Manager by the name of S. Mabaso - all gone unanswered.

The issue at hand is that my mom, a Portuguese speaking pensioner paid the Glen store a visit a couple of months ago and by some misunderstanding she ended up signing the agreement to the service fee which was recently implemented. I feel the need at this point to re-iterate the language barrier in this scenario as well as the fact that she has a hearing impairment and lives off the state pension of R 1 500 per month. When her next monthly statement was e-mailed to me and I saw the fee, I asked her about it to which she explained that she had called a friend who was with her at the time to explain to the teller that she in fact, did not agree to the fee. Obviously something went wrong somewhere...

Thinking this would be a simple explanation to a fellow human, I e-mailed the accounts department to which a response was received saying that she had agreed to the fee. I further explained that there must have been some misunderstanding as my mom cannot afford to be charged R 22.80 a month when she needs all she has to feed and clothe herself. My e-mailed explanations, calls, pleas and frustrations have met a brick wall.

At this point my mom wants to close her Edgars account but again, she is a pensioner who earns R 1 500 and having a clothing account is convenient and practical for a senior citizen in her position. I cannot understand what the difficulty is that the customer relations, customer services or accounts department people are having to resolve this simple matter!!

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. We understand your frustration in this incident however once the service fee is sign we will not be able to cancel the fee as it has become part of the terms and condition.

Please note that the service fee will not be levied to your account without your authorisation. Although it has become necessary to charge a service fee, we have taken the plight of our customers into consideration and discounted this fee to R22.80 per month which equates to R273.60 yearly as opposed to the prescribed maximum fee of R60 allowed per month by the NCA (R720 yearly) .

As noted within the letter , your consent will be required when next purchasing in store and should you wish to decline the implementation of the service fee, Edcon reserves the right to action your account accordingly.

You have been a longstanding customer and we thank you for your patronage and hope that you will continue to be part of the Edcon family.

Your reference number is ***/GO

Kind regards,
Edcon customer experience team,
