Charged for unwanted extras

In April I signed up for a credit account from Edgars and I received the credit agreement along with my first E-statement.

In the credit agreement it is confirmed that I am not signed up for any extras, just as I explicitly for asked in store when I opened the account.

In October I made a late payment, and in the next e-statement I received an overdue amount was reflecting on my account. I then contacted Edgars to enquire whether my late payment was indeed received as it was not reflecting. This matter was resolved swiftly, however, upon closer inspection of my e-statement I noticed that Club Classic was being deducted each month since the inception of the account.

I asked whether this was an optional or compulsory addition - since I know for a fact I never signed up for any extras. I was infomed that it is not compulsory and that the Club Membership was then canceled on 03/11/2016.

Also, two months after opening the account, "Account Protection Plan" was newly added - also an extra I never signed up for. This is a very small amount, but I still did not sign up for it.

I asked Edgars to repay me the club fees since I never made use of the specials it offers - again because I didn't know that it was more than just a normal credit account. Edgars simply responed that I did not lodge a complaint within 30 days the problem occured and will therefore not repay me.

They current outstanding amount of my account is R158.85. The total fees charged for Club Classic is 266.25 (the first month was charged pro-rata, R28.25). Thus, my account could have been payed off already but instead, due to the extra charges, my account is still not settled and additional interest could be charged on the total outstanding amount.

To top it all, a block was placed on my account just 2 weeks after it was opened due to "not fully meeting the new Credit Act requirements". I also recently received an email saying "In order to enjoy the benefits of your Edgars Club membership and insurance cover, you must have an active credit account".

This means that Edgars charged a club fee and insurance fee that I did not sign up for, nor could I make use of it since my account was blocked.

To me it seems Edgars knew that I was unaware for unwanted club membership, and then a month later added another extra I did not want, simply because they felt I would not notice.

I did not mistakenly sign up for anything, all mistakes came from their side and still they refuse to repay me. I appeal to all doing business with Edgars to watch them with a hawk's eye, as they will charge for things like this when they notice you are not on the ball.
