Edenvale Hospital

It is with deep sadness that I must share my wife's recent experience at this hospital. Despite arriving by ambulance, she waited in agony for nine hours before a doctor finally saw her. After being examined, she was informed that she needed to be admitted—a process that took another six hours. With no available hospital beds, she was placed on a gurney, where she remained for five days.

The conditions were appalling. A doctor initially prescribed pain medication and other essential treatments for her bone marrow cancer (MMD), but she never received the prescribed pain relief via IV. The nurses failed to administer it despite clear instructions in her file. When questioned, one nurse blamed my wife, claiming she had forgotten requesting it. On the fourth day, another doctor reviewed her case and stated outright that she should be at Johannesburg General Hospital, as this facility was unequipped to treat her. My wife, overwhelmed with pain and distress, called me in tears, saying she had to get out. She faced resistance when trying to leave, as staff refused to discharge her, yet continued to deny her proper care.

The hospital conditions were deplorable: no beds, no adequate medication, and barely any food or water. Hygiene was nonexistent—bloodstains covered the bedding and floors, with large rats roaming freely. The toilets were filthy, lacked toilet paper, and were shared among over 30 patients. The cleaning staff were on strike due to unpaid wages, leaving the facility in complete disarray. The wards were overcrowded, with mentally ill patients placed alongside others. It felt more like a prison than a place of healing.

This hospital is failing the very people it is meant to serve. There is no compassion, no professionalism, and no regard for human dignity. It must be shut down immediately. If you value your life, avoid this place.
