Short-changing cash customers

I have noticed that shops in the Edcon group, like most other retailers have changed their prices from R--.99 to R--.95 after the 1c coin was taken out of circulation. It seems they haven't caught on that the 5c coin is also being (has been) phased out, so they still charge prices, knowing full well that they cannot turn out change. While shops like Woollies, Clicks, Dischem etc. will round the amount down, Edgars and CNA round the amount up.

On Monday, I purchased an item from Edgars Northgate that was marked R199.95 and obviously paid with R200. My purchase was put in a bag, I was handed my slip and got a very polite thank you and good-bye, but no change. When I queried this, I was told that she didn't have 5c coins, so I asked if she should not maybe give me 10c change like other shops, to which she rep**** that she did not have 10c coins either and proceeded to serve the customer behind me.

That afternoon, I sent an email to Edgars complaining about this attitude, but I haven't had the courtessy of a reply, hence my complaint here.

I am really getting very tired of retailers charging prices in denominations that are no longer in circulation. Surely it is time ALL RETAILERS adjust their prices to reflect the denominations available in our currency?? 5c is a miniscule amount, I know, but if they take 5c from every cash customer a day, they will end up with hundreds of Rands extra by the end of the week. Do they donate this to charity??

The Branch Manager for Edgars Northgate phoned me yesterday to apologise for the experience and undertook to discuss the pricing phenomenon at HO level. Maybe Edcon will take the lead in adjusting their prices to reflect available denominations in our currency.

I will not adjust my original star rating, but I do appreciate the effort and the response.
