Rude, contradictory Bellville mechanic
I asked my mother to take my car to a mechanic she swore was reputable, DUP’s Auto in Durban Road Bellville. Before taking the car through, I called them and told them that the car is leaking oil. They took a look and said that the oil filter needs to be replaced. I had this replaced and a week later the car is still leaking oil in the same two spots. I asked my mother to take the car in again. All of a sudden there is something else that needs to be replaced. I called them and spoke to the owner Deon and asked what was going on. He proceeded to say that because the engine was very dirty they only immediately saw the oil filter needed replacement. When asked why they stopped at the oil filter, he rep**** that the engine was too dirty for them to see any other leaks and that the engine had to be cleaned before hand. I asked him then how could he suddenly a week later see ANOTHER leak that he couldn’t see last week seeing that the engine (according to him) was still dirty. At this point he started raising his voice at me – a clear indication that he was caught out being dishonest. The “dirt factor” in the engine is exactly the same as it was last week and when I insisted he explain why he can now suddenly see a new leak when he couldn’t see it last week he started screaming at me. At two points during the telephonic conversation I had to quiet him down. I told him that I won’t allow him to speak to me in such a manner and that he had no respect for his clients by yelling at them. He keeps interrupting and is very evasive when being asked a question (i.e. “Why did you stop at the oil filter?” “the engine was too dirty to see other leaks”, “Why can you see this new leak now and not last week?” “I didn’t take the car for a test drive last week to check for further leaks.”) I told him that he quoted me wrong and did the job wrong because he didn’t do a thorough check on the engine and that according to the Consumer Protection Act if I am not entirely satisfied he needs to correct it, he stated he is not bound to the CPA. People like this (self-employed) need to remember that your client base is dependent on your service and after-service relations. Your customer base grows based on word of mouth. This is now way to speak to your customers. The fact that he yelled at me as if I am a child is totally unprofessional. If your client is upset you need to keep calm yourself – therein calming the client. You don’t get arrogant telling the client that you know more about cars than they do or “you don’t want to keep quiet and let me tell you why I am right.” Anyone thinking of going to D.U.P should rethink as the mechanic/owner has no public relations s****s.
