Treating children like dogs

I would like to inform you about the horrible experience we had yesterday at the Due South branch in Ilanga Mall Nelspruit.

My mother and myself along with my 3 and 5 year old girls where looking for a present for my father for Christmas. While my mother and I was browsing around, my two girls were playing on the seats where the people sit to fit shoes.

Out of nowhere, the cashier starts yelling ‘NO! NO! NO!’ while clapping his hands to emphasize each ‘NO’….while charging at them, the same way you would chase a dog out of the house. Now the problem I have with this scenario is:

1) My children are not dogs, no one should speaks to them like that. Customers should be treated with respect. Rather ignore them if you don’t want to deal with them but, seriously, shouting at them? At little children?

2) Why could they not play there? There where no other customers, so its not like they bothered any one, or took someone’s seat that wanted to fit shoes. The seats are solid wood and steel, there is no ways they could possibly cause any damage to them. They don’t even weigh 30kg together and they were not wearing shoes. I do not understand why they could not play on them. They were keeping to themself instead of running through the store. (they where jumping off them and climbing back on to jump off again. thats hardly the remoddeling kind of play)

3) Pick on someone your own size. Why not confront me if my children’s actions are bothering you? Why shout at my kids?

This was embarrassing since every one could hear the commotion and the other staff members laughed at us. I have never felt so unwelcome and in my opinion this behaviour is totally unacceptable, and we will never go there again.

Hi Leonie

We’re so sorry to hear that you had a bad experience in our store! This definitely isn’t what we want to hear, and we’ll be sure to address the issue to ensure this doesn’t happen again.

We’ve passed your details on to the Area Manager, who will get in touch with you directly.

Kind regards
