My DSTV service has been disconnected for more than a month now. I haven't been able to pay due to an emergency that I had earlier this year. My payment date is the 25th but my service got cut at around the 10th of the following month. After that I kept quiet knowing I will attend to it when I can afford again.

I got a surprise call this afternoon from a debt collector tell me she's calling on behalf of Multichoice with regards to a debt that I owe them. When I asked she told me it's for the grace period they gave me. I got really furious because Multichoice never informed me that I had pay for grace periods if I fail to pay and they never contacted me about the debt, I only heard about it for the first time from this debt collector.

My questions now are:

1. Why didn't Multichoice inform me that I would be liable for this grace period they gave me if I fail to pay. Is it a way to trap customers from leaving them?

2. I'm not trying to deny the debt because I am aware that I had the service on for longer, but why didn't Multichoice call me first about it? Why did I have to hear that from a debt collector for the first time? Am I now gonna be liable for that debt collector's fees?

I need satisfactory answers to this.
