Package Downgrade Nightmare

I’m certain I’m among many South Africans experiencing deep frustration and feeling exploited by DSTV, aware of its exclusive viewing monopoly in South Africa and their deliberate exploitation of subscribers.

Compiling this complaint presents a substantial challenge. Given the overwhelming number of dissatisfied subscribers on “Hello Peter,” and considering the company’s evident pattern of dismissive responses to service delivery complaints, it is likely that a simple apology will be the most probable outcome.

I’m using this platform to highlight the deliberate obstacles DSTV imposes on its clients when they downgrade their viewing package.

After the Rugby season, I decided to downgrade my DSTV premium package due to the exorbitant fees for entertainment which can be found on comparable international streaming services for a fraction of price.

The process commenced when I adhered to the on-screen prompts provided by the amiable chatbot on the DSTV website, initiating a downgrade of my premium package. Initially, I was pleasantly surprised by the simplicity of the procedure. The process culminated in a message from the chatbot confirming the successful downgrade of my package and informing me that payment adjustments have been made to debit my account on the first of the month for the new subscription. During the process, I was clearly informed that my Showmax subscription will terminate.

To my surprise, upon reviewing my account statement for December, I discovered that an amount significant lesser to the downgraded package subscribed to was debited.

Forward to today, December 7th, I discovered that all channels on my TV set are malfunctioning and displaying a message indicating that amounts are due on the subscription package I have. (I strongly suspect that this is also a tactic employed by DSTV to retain its premium customers, as without their premium subscription this message is always visible on all channels not subscribed to.)

Subsequently, not being notified and having no other choice I accessed the online portal to discover that the full amount remained outstanding on the downgraded package, despite the earlier partial debit from my account. Furthermore, as if it were an automated process, I am now magically resubscribed to their Showmax streaming service. Consequently, the arduous process of consulting with one of their online agents commenced. During this consultation, I was without apology informed that the amount charged was erroneous and that a rectification would be undertaken. However, I was also informed that a R50 reconnection fee was now due!

I had not disconnected my service and certainly did not resubscribe to Showmax. Had I not consulted with one of their online consultants, I would have paid the full amount, which I strongly suspect is precisely what DSTV intends for you to do.

I felt compelled to pay the reconnection fee and was left feeling violated of my rights as a subscriber. I am deeply dissatisfied with the company’s blatant disregard for fair, just, and effective customer service delivery.

I am very curious as to DSTV’s response regarding my grievance. In the interim, I sincerely hope that this serves as a cautionary tale to my fellow South Africans, potentially preventing another individual from enduring such a protracted and challenging process.

Subscribers to DStv are exiting the platform in large numbers. I can now discern the reasons behind this exodus and am uncertain whether the appointment of a new CEO will yield any positive results in a system that appears to be relentlessly extracting every possible cent from its subscribers.

Regrettably, and I am willing to wager a substantial sum on this, such a subpar and compromised service delivery will not endure. In a few years, there will likely emerge a formidable competitor that will significantly diminish DSTV’s market share, potentially leading to its eventual demise.

It is deeply concerning that DSTV, a company that claims to be proudly South African, engages in such ********* and exploitative practices. By greedily and dishonestly profiting from what should be a simple and straightforward procedure, DSTV undermines the very essence of South African values and integrity.

This ostentatious response from a purportedly esteemed South African company starkly reveals their subpar customer service. They have established a dedicated “Hello Peter” team to address the seemingly thousands of monthly complaints that pour in. Despite the passage of over a month since my complaint, I have yet to receive a response. As South Africans, it is evident that we have no alternative but to endure DSTV’s monopoly, their arbitrary treatment of clients, and their antiquated service delivery.
