Multichoice- paying for service not used!

So after two years it appears that I owe Multichoice?! How does this happen. My tv was ****** and I didn’t bother to pay my monthly subscription. From my understanding that if you don’t use the service, the service gets suspended? How is it that I owe Multichoice?

If this is the case that my service is still running - how does this happen?

Please sort this out and explain. I will take this to the ombudsman because people shouldn’t pay for services that they don’t use at all!!
