Multichoice - Could not care less about their customers

I am a long-standing customer of DSTV and Multichoice, I have subscribed to their perium package for years.

Last month we were suddenly notified that we owe them approximately R7100. Telephonic queries resulted in back and forth dicussion as we were blissfully unaware that our monthly payments were not coming off our account. After years of this happening reliably, it is simply not one of the account we check each month. In any case our service was still active, so no warnings there either.

The reult of our discussions with a Ms Sellina Mallinga, is that they cannot explain why they stopped debiting our account. The error was on their side as we had signed a debit order. When queried why the service was not discontinued, we were told that we were on a contract and that contract customers did not have their service suspended for non-payment.

Furthermore when asked why they had taken 10 months to notify us, again there was no clear explanation. Ms Mallinga informed us that it is very simple, we pay back the outstanding monthly payments on top of our normal subscription. Needless to say, this became unaffordable for me, so I simply cancelled my subscription.

I made it clear that the error was not ours, and that we were being penalised for an error made by Multichoice, and that I was very unhappy about this. I was told that it was my responsibility to make sure the payments were being made monthly. Fair enough, but that does not eliminate their error. I asked for a 50% discount on the outstanding amount because I felt that Multichoice needs to take responsibility for their errors. They offered us a 2 month discount.

I have been trying in vain to get a final figure from this Ms Sellina Mallinga, no reply to repeated emails and what we need to do in order to pay the outstanding amount. I have even signed an authority for Multichoice to debit my account, but get no response from their office.

All very frustrating.

I did receive a call from the same person I have been dealing with, I asked for and was promied everything in writing. At least my review on hellopeter triggered something. This all within 30 minutes of publishing on Hellopeter.
I will wait and see how this all works out.

Well here is the final outcome.
Multichoice definetly does not care whether they keep customers or not!
Within 30 minutes of me posting on Hellopeter, I had resolution to the problem. The outcome is that because of a mistake made by Multichoice, and their failure to notify me, I am now paying back an arrears amount for the next 12 months. I asked that Multichoice take responsibility for their mistakes , they did this in the form of a 3 month discount on my arrears amount. To be really fair, I feel that should have taken 50% of the arrears amount. I DID NOT STOP MY PAYMENTS! Multi choice stopped taking the money from me and then failed to notify me timeously.
I can't help wondering how this would stand up from a legal perspective or with the ombudsman? They count on the fact that I don't have the time, money or inclination to do so.
I cannot afford double payments on my Dstv account, and Mulrichoice has made absolutely no effort to try and keep me as a loyal customer. The real truth is that they have a monopoly in this market and really couldn't care if they lose customers. I suspect that there are probably many other customers in the same predicament, but have not voiced their frustration or dissatisfaction.
The really good news for me is that I have now been introduced to a far more affordable option. the world of online television, Netflix, and many other options to choose from. With the kind of service from Multichoice, and the high subscription rates, who needs Multichoice anyway, try the online options, it is far more affordable, with no advertising wasting your viewing time!!!!
