Explora a waste of time and money and DSTV passes the buck

I invested in the Premium price lock package including the DSTV explora. When it was installed the installer advised me that the explora has a high outage rate due to the additional speed and features. Had I known just how bad it was I would nver have wasted my time and money. Each time I have contacted DSTV due to a no signal, channel blocked or in fact any problem I am informed it is an installation problem. Amazing how this installation problem only crops up if there are clouds in the sky. I used an accreddited installer who was meticulous in following installation protocol and checking signal strength. How on earth can DSTV use a so called improved product when the older PVR decoders are more reliable and don't lose signal when the weather is less than perfect. Not a happy client/customer. At this stage I will be reviewing my options. One option being to contact the consumer protection regarding a contract that does not deliver the service promised. I no longer accept the bad installation story I get from DSTV as the installation has been checked and there is absolutely nothing wrong with the installation, dish or connections. The problem lies in the fact that the Explora is a fair weather decoder and no provision was made for any deterioration in weather conditions to keep signal up and running.

I have been contacted by DSTV and they are being very helpful. Hopefully the issue will be resolved tomorrow. Just a pity I had to have a temper tantrum and throw my toys first. I would like to mention the call center operator was very polite and assisted me as much as he could. Unfortunately I did not get his name.

I am still not satisfied with the explora. I chopped down trees to try and improve signal - no improvement. Following this are two messages I sent on Face Book. :

Hi Mpho - first I would like to thank you and Stephen (Steven) for your first class service - something we, as customers, do not often receive, You can both give yourselves a pat on the back. Unfortunately the problem of my signal is not resolved and the suggestions made to try and rectify the problem may or may not actually solve the problem and could be expensive solutions. So although I am a happy chappy on one side I am not happy that I was not made aware of this problem before signing up for the explora price lock. I feel as if I have bought a car that can only go downhill and cannot be driven up hill. In all the years of having no issues with signal I invest in what is supposed to be a superior decoder only to find I am worse off than I was with my old reliable PVR decoder. Had I known in advance that the explora needs clear line of sight I could have made an informed decision based on the area, trees, and any other "block" of the signal. Although I am told it is a signal problem I personally believe it is a flaw in the explora and provision should have been made for people who do not live in deserts. With modern technology I cannot believe that something cannot be done to ensure the decoder (explora) can be fully functional without clear line of sight ie run on a lesser signal strength. Unfortunately, should anyone ask me about the explora, I will advise them that until this issue has been resolved I cannot recommend it. To add to this, at great risk to life and limb, I cut down the trees that could be impacting on signal and it has made no difference what so ever to signal strength. Obviously I am not using the fancy boxes the installer uses but on the TV and when I did check it was even lower that prior to be cutting my trees down. On that note I would like to take this opportunity to wish you the very best for 2017 - may it be a very blessed year for your and yours. Carol

Hi Mpho Please can you tell me who I can contact regarding the issue with the explora signal. I cannot accept paying over R900 a month for the next two years for a product that doesn't work for hours on end especially as when I was paying a much lower rate and lost signal only for a few minutes at a time. I am paying for a service that I am not receiving as well as a decoder that does not work. The shortcomings of the explora should have been explained to me prior to me signing the contract - I want the explora replaced with a decoder that gives me at least equal coverage to what I had before installing the explora
